Oppenheim was an accomplished clinician and made a significant contribution with this monograph on encephalitis and brain abscesses. He divided the book into two parts so that each subject could be treated separately. In each part he fully discusses the etiology, pathology, symptomatology, diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy of the disease under discussion. Oppenheim was the acknowledged leader of German clinical neurology during the last decade of the nineteenth century.
