Lucian of Samosata was a Greek satirist of the Silver Age of Greek literature whose extant works number more than eighty pieces, of which are three collections of 71 shorter dialogues. / "Jean Le Clerc, or Clericus . . ., the son of a Greek Professor at Geneva, was educated at Geneva, Grenoble and Saumur, and, after a brief stay in England, settled for the rest of his life in the Netherlands. It was in 1683 that he took up his abode in Amsterdam; in the following year he was appointed to a Professorship in the Arminian College, and he continued to reside there for more than half a century. He published works extended over the wide domain of theology, philosophy, and scholarship." He was vastly productive, putting together his Ars Critica, an edition of Festus, the poets C. Pedo Albinovanus and P. Cornelius Severus, and the whole of Livy. "In Greek, he edited Hesoid, the fragments of Meander and Philemon (1709), and the Dialogues of Aeschines Socraticus. He also published Greek scholia on Lucian, collected Latin inscriptions, . . . [etc.]" Sandys, History of Classical Scholarship, II, pp. 441-2. Full title: Opera. Ex Versione Ioannis Benedicti.
