Lucian of Samosata was a Greek satirist of the Silver Age of Greek literature whose extant works number more than eighty pieces, of which are three collections of 71 shorter dialogues. / "Jean Le Clerc, or Clericus . . ., the son of a Greek Professor at Geneva, was educated at Geneva, Grenoble and Saumur, and, after a brief stay in England, settled for the rest of his life in the Netherlands. It was in 1683 that he took up his abode in Amsterdam; in the following year he was appointed to a Professorship in the Arminian College, and he continued to reside there for more than half a century. He published works extended over the wide domain of theology, philosophy, and scholarship." He was vastly productive, putting together his Ars Critica, an edition of Festus, the poets C.
