pp. 321-323. Disbound. Very good. When Ferdinand von Richthofen returned to Germany after a total of twelve years of extensive research trips in the East Asian region, a new and different picture of China emerged as a result of the publication of his research results in the Western world. Born in 1833 in Carlsruhe/Schlesien, Richthofen studied geology in Breslau and Berlin and completed years of service for the Geological Reichsanstalt in Austria. Richthofen received the suggestion to research in Central Asia during his studies in Berlin. Around the leadership of Alexander von Humboldt and Carl Ritter, ideas were formed and plans developed, for the exploration of Asia, which remained largely unknown to the West. For Carl Ritter as well as for Alexander von Humboldt, later in his life, Asia was a focus of their scientific work. The geographical material published in their works, Humboldt's L'Asie centrale, which was created after his journey from Asia in 1829, and above all, Carl Ritter's monumental Asian work, Allgemeine Erdkunde, took an intensive scientific view. New maps were developed in this context. As Richthofen stated in the first volume of his Chinese work, der vorhandene Stoff verwerthet. Die Zeit der selbstandigen Forschungen in China began. ["The time of independent research in China began."]. :: Zogner; [bound with II:] Alexander Von FRANTZIUS, "Der sudostliche Theil der Republik Costarica." [Costa Rica]. pp. 323-330; [with III:] P.G. Lorentz, "Ein Ausflug nach dem Sulitelma," pp. 330-341; [with IV:] "Die Deutsche Nordpolar-Expedition, erste briefliche Nachrichten uber ihren Verlauf vom 15. Juni bis 29. Juli 1869." pp. 341-350; [with V:] "Ruckkehr der Rosenthal'schen Dampfer Bienenkorb" und Albert" und der Lamont'-schen Expedition; Carlsen's kuhne Fahrt in's Sibirische Eismeer; die Sidoroff'sche Expedition." pp.350-360. 2 map plates [1 folding] (both with color outlining). / See: Lothar Zogner, Ferdinand von Richthofen - Neue Sicht auf ein altes Land; Chongyou Wang, Bibliography of the Mineral Wealth and Geology of China, p. 49
