These papers contain Schonbein's important work on ozone and his invention of cellulose nitrate (also called guncotton or pyroxolin) and collodion. Collodion, or as Abel calls it celloidin, is a solution of pyroxolin in alcohol and ether. The usefulness of a thin film of this material as a diffusion barrier was first recognized by Adolph Fick. "Schonbein published more than 350 works, mostly qualitative, covering a wide range of research but especially ozone, autooxidation, induced reactions, guncotton, electrochemistry, and passive iron."
