This paper discusses Carrel's new method of cultivating cells of warm-blooded animals outside the body. Carrel's work did not add appreciably to the understanding of cellular physiology, but his work with tissue culture has contributed greatly to scientific theory and practice. One outgrowth of his work is the growing of virus cultures in animal cells and the preparation of vaccines. In 1912 he received the Nobel prize for his surgical and cell-culture experiments. DSB, III, p. 91; Nobel, the man and his prizes, pp. 270-271. First Edition.
