8vo. iv, (v), 382, ads. 14 pp. Index. Dark green cloth, gilt-stamped cover signature and spine title. Former library copy with the usual markings and defects, including several red ink stamps and library spine numbers rubbed out. Very good. Included in this collection is Chapter XII, "Astronomers and Students in Humble Life," pp.319-372. It gives short accounts, sometimes in their own words, of the amateur astronomers William Ballingall, John Robertson, Thomas Cooke (1807-1868), Samuel Lancaster, and John Jones (1818-1898). Allan Chapman, in his The Victorian Amateur Astronomer, discusses Robertson, Cooke and Jones using this book as a significant reference for his observations.
