Alonzo Lewis : 'The Indian name of the river which now forms part of the western boundary of the town, is Saugus; by which appelIation the town was known for several years. The eastern extremity was called Swampscot, which name it till retains. Nahant; '. an Indian word signifying an Island, is the original name of the peninsula which has become so celebrated.'
