DeRusha, the former campaign finance manager for Boston Mayor and Vatican Ambassador Ray Flynn, who served a nine-month sentence for income tax evasion, campaign reporting violations and larceny, is now living in Provincetown and is telling his side of the sordid story with a self-published political murder mystery he calls 'Faithless Friends.' Mixing Miss Marple with Machievelli, deRusha has conceived a complex plot that revolves around the murder of a former Boston Mayor and Vatican Ambassador named Francis Reilly. High among the murder suspects is Reilly's former campaign manager, Duncan DeVere, just out of jail after serving time as the fall guy for Reilly's financial finagling. Looking to clear his name, DeVere turns detective and comes up with a long list of suspects, all of whom have recognizable counterparts in the real world of Boston politics. 'It's very similar to what my own experience was,' say deRusha, with some understatement. Homicide aside, the novel is a parallel universe to deRusha's. The rise and fall of DeVere mirrors that of deRusha up to the smallest details. Like his protagonist, deRusha spent 10 years as a soldier in the political wars. His induction into Flynns' army came in 1983. Added to his incarceration was a forced vow of silence. DeRusha was threatened with 'being put into solitary confinement and really having a very unpleasant circumstance with very dangerous people,' he says. DeRusha lost his suit against the Massachusetts correctional system for denying him his First Amendment rights. 'Faithless Friends,' deRusha's feast following his First Amendment fast, has its origins in the memoir that he'd planned on writing before his world was turned inside out. Upon his release from prison, deRusha, after rebalancing issues in his head, revived the project as a fiction roman a clef with a mystery overlay. Harry Grill, Flynn's attorney, said, 'It's no surprise that the malicious lies and web of deceit spun by deRusha, a convicted felon, would find expression in a hateful and politically motivated novel.'
