Training in Theory and Practice. London MacMillan and Co. 1866. 1st ed., Oblong 8vo, blue cloth. 202 pp. Gilt titles and spine with gilt artwork of the Oxford Eight rowing team on the front cover; two folding plates. An early treatise on the sport of rowing. Maclaren was a Scottish expert on physical education. In 1860, he was asked to develop a new training program of physical education for the British Army. In Training in Theory and Practice he applies his principles in detail to a single sport, rowing -- an art of considerable intricacy involving the possession of both muscular and respiratory power, to promote which is the object of all training'". CONDITION: Poor: text block is generally clean and tight but the last leaf, along with the rear cover are detached. Elsewhere, covers are worn, bumped at corners; split front pastedown hinge has been tape repaired, small chips at head and tail of spine; three contemporary book plates inside front cover. One of the two folding plates has a 6-inch closed tear where it attaches to the text block.
