1st ed. Tan wrappers with black lettering. 529 pp., numbered continuously between the two volumes. Vol. I has100 full-page plates and 116 figures and Vol. II 105 full-page plates and 183 figures. One of the great early studies of pottery of this Central American region with copious historical background and discussions of culture, customs, tribes, languages, religion, etc. Condition. Vol 1 Fair: Covers worn, cracks to spine, all corners rubbed. Text block is clean and unmarked, but loosely shaken and cracked at several locations. Vol 2: Poor; similar condition but covers are partially detached and with larger tears to spine ends. Stray ink marks on front cover. See photos. Ex-libris the Stendahl Art Gallery, Los Angeles, with Stendahl penciled across the top of each front cover. This set was a well-used reference copy in the gallerys library, hence the rough condition. Until its recent closure, the Stendahl Gallery was one of America's oldest continuously operating private art galleries. Art from the Stendahl collections found a home in The Louvre and many other major institutions throughout the world. Upon closing the gallery, the family donated a significant collection of photographs and documentation to the Getty Research Institute.
