Our Darling's Surprise Pictures (movable children's book)

1st edition, 4to. Red cloth spine; light green paper over boards with chromolithographed title and illustrations on front board. Floral endpapers. A Victorian dissolving window picture book from the golden age of the moveable book. A tab is pulled at the lower edge, which animates and completely changes the illustration above. Artwork by Nister, who also served as publisher. The facing pages have accompanying poems by English poet and songwriter Frederic Weatherly. A charming, and scarce, item with 8 chromolithographic color transformations, all in Very Good working order. CONDITION: Good-. Notoriously prone to wear, the covers are fair at best, with moderate soiling and severely cracked hinges that are nearly detached from the text block; numerous edge tears in the end papers which are also toned. The text block and transformations were printed on better quality paper. The text block is much better. Facing pages in good condition, some with minor edge wear and toning. All of the tipped-in transformations are in very good condition, with some toning to the margins of the backing pages. Two have closed tears in the backing margin, not affecting the tipped-in portion.
