Forman Brown was one of the world's leaders in puppet theatre in his day, as well as an important early gay novelist. Frontispiece and 3 full-page woodcuts by Packard, all with spider-web patterned glassine guards. This issue with the illustrated jacket precedes the more common edition issued in wrappers, also with a jacket. This is the first book by the noted gay author who also wrote the 1933 novel Better Angel, about a young man coming to terms with his homosexuality. The novel is regarded as the first American novel to present the 'gay' experience in a healthy light.[Under the pseudonym Richard Meeker.] When it was reprinted in 1995, under the assumption that the author was no more alive, Brown stepped forward and acknowledged the novel was heavily autobiographic.

Inscribed on front flyleaf to Charleson Gray, another writer, most known for writing the Photoplay novelization of The Vagabond Lover, Rudy Vallees first film about a small-town boy who finds fame and romance when he joins a dance band. (1929)
