The 1931 film was nominated for three academy awards, with Frederic March winning best actor. The film was made prior to the full enforcement of the Production and is remembered today for its strong sexual content. When MGM remade the film 10 years later with Spencer Tracy, the studio bought the negative and the rights to the earlier film; every print that could be located was recalled and destroyed, and for decades, the film was believed lost. A print was rediscovered in 1967. Unknown whether the copy of the original 1931 script, which was used to make this 1940 version, survived.
