Frank Jay Haynes (1853 1921) was a professional photographer, publisher, and entrepreneur who played a major role in documenting the settlement and early history of the Northwestern United States. He became both the official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railway and of Yellowstone National Park His photographs were some of the earliest mass circulated images of the park and gained iconic status, shaping and supporting the public opinion of the park during its formative years.
Commissioned in 1876 to make views along the route of the Northern Pacific Railroad, Hayes traveled throughout the West until 1905, working in a railroad car equipped as both gallery and darkroom. During an 1881 rail trip to the newly established Yellowstone National Park, Haynes applied for a commercial concession as park photographer. Three years later, he opened a formal studio and photography gallery inside the park, selling prints of the park's natural wonders to tourists. His photographs were also widely published in articles, journals, and books, and turned into stereographs, cabinet cards, and postcards as well as larger mounted images up to 20x24".
Hayes published in a variety of formats including large albumen prints, silver gelatin prints, and plain paper "boudoir" sized prints as here. Collections are in numerous western museums and galleries as well as the Smithsonian, National Gallery of Art, Library of Congress, and Getty Museum. Prints occasionally appear at auction and dealer catalogs, but rarely an assortment of this size.
