The author served on the Kokoda Trail during World War Two. Prior to demob he spent six months in a hospital where he came to know a number of men who had been Japanese POWs. As a result he undertook medical studies, ultimately becoming a Psychiatrist. He later had a tour in Vietnam as a psychiatrist with the Australian Force. He has long battled the attitudes of the military, regarding the way it classified and managed men suffering from battle stress.
