Von Grimmelshausen [1625-1676] was the greatest German novelist of the seventeenth century. He was most famous for his picaresque novel 'Simplicius Simplicissimus'. Follwing his success he wrote a number of other books and stories featuring some of the same characters. Mother Courage is one of these.
