McWhir was born in Ireland in 1759 and emigrated to America. He supervised the Academy at Alexandria Virginia where George Washinton was a Trustee. McWhir then moved to Sunbury near Savannah Georgia and was friends with C. C. Jones and many other prominent Georgians. He died at 92, an honored Presbyterian.
