Beige fan top with stick removed; red titles and color illustration of elegant woman on back. There is damage at the bottom where the stick was remove but no real loss. Toning, soiling, and wear but still rather attractive. ; Color Illustration; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 1 pages; I date this fan as ca. 1900 but I suspect that it is really from the 1890's. L. M. Theobold operated his Cafe and Candy Kitchen at 28 Patton Avenue in Asheville from 1889 into the 20th century. He lived in a house in the Ravenscroft-Hilliard-Church Street triangle. His home at 90 Church Street has on the National Register of Historic Places. Theobold's wife was involved in real estate sold the house in 1910 and the Theobold's moved to 76 Church Street. In an 1893 Asheville Directory for tourists, Theobold's Cafe emphasized the quality of their food, especially soda fountain drinks, ice cream, bob bons and oysters. Theobold indicated that his cafe was "the most attractively arranged and best conducted establishment of the kind in North Carolina." Not just Asheville, but the whole state. This is an unusual and significant bit of Asheville advetising ephemera.
