Ray Douglas started in the restaurant business with the Pine Cone in Merced, CA in the 1940s, along what was then U.S. Highway 99 next to the train station. In 1952 he added the Branding Iron steakhouse on the site, which is where the Branding Iron still stands today. This is a small, 5 by 8" menu, designed to be mailed, with space on the back for a message and address. Inside is what is probably an abbreviated souvenir menu. I am dating this to the 1950's primarily due to the phone #, RAndolph2-1822. The 2 letter, 5 digit phone numbers were used from around1948 into the 50's, but were phased out by the early 60's. It is interesting to note that the Branding Iron in Merced today still has the number 722-1822. The original building burned in 1987 and reopened under a new owner in 1988 and is still going strong today. Steaks are, however, somewhat more expensive than the prices on this menu! Condition is NF.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall
