Brown cloth with titles and decoration in black. Some edge and corner wear but book is square and binding is secure. Unfortunately a forme owner had boldly signed both the front pastedown and first text page in pencil. There is a stamp of the Laughlin Industrial Center, Central Y.W. C. A. on the fffep. This was Murfree's fifth novel set in the mountains of Tennessee. I am unsure if this is a first printing or not. 1886 is on the back of the title page and 1887 on the front. Before 1891, Houghton, Mifflin tended to indicate firsts by putting the date on the front of the title page for the first printing and leaving it off for subsequent printings. I find no copies of this book with 1886 on the front of the title page, so it may be that the book was copyrighted late in 1886 but not actually printed until 1887.
