Wurzbach, incumbent Republican congressman, defeated in 1928 on the face of the returns by Augustus McCloskey, Democratic nominee supported by the San Antonio City machine, was seated as the winner after a thirteen months contest. The League, founded by prominent citizens declared against "Machine rule" and demanded honest elections, honest spending of bond proceeds, only two terms for office holders, and an end to organized gambling.
