Stated first edition. Light yellowing on page edges.The city needed a new city hall to meet the promises of the 20th Century and voted to build one on Military Plaza, the won's oldest market square. The city voted also to build a modern municipal market house nearby for the up-rooted market people, and named Alfred Giles as architect. Giles' market house looked like a castle in the middle of the prairie. Of brick and decorative ironwork, it had graceful verandas, cupolas, towers and an auditorium for concerts, boxing matches and political rallies. But it worked. The new municipal market house had refrigeration and running water, plus adjoining open squares for the fast growing wholesale produce business. In the 1930s, after a period of decline, the Giles building was torn down and El Mercado was built at the site on Market Square.
