Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire.

3 volumes. 8vo. Consisting of 418 copy letters, some on more than one page, all in a presumed secretary’s hand. Full contemporary green morocco, gilt, all edges gilt, with a nice watercolour three quarterlength portrait of Granby tipped into the front of the first volume. Charles Cecil John Manners [1815 - 1888] was the third, but oldest surviving son of the 5th Duke of Rutland, and Marques of granby until he inherited the Dukedom in 1857. He was Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire from 1852 until 1857 when he successfully petitioned the Queen to succeed his father as Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire. This would appear to be a complete record of copy letters sent during his tenure as Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire, presumably in a secretary’s hand and ‘signed’ Granby until March 1857, when ‘signed’ Rutland on mourning letter paper with the Belvoir Castle stamp. He was a not very notable Conservative politician from 1837 as Member for Stamford and was probably more suited to parochial affairs, accepting the Lord Lieutenancy of Lincolnshire on leaving parliament. Most of the correspondence is of a local nature, with his primary duty being the organisation of the local militia, and includes references for soldiers, instructions to his deputy and other subordinate officers. The original letters would of course be scattered in various personal and institutional archives, or most likely lost entirely, making this a unique record of local administration.
