A collection of five small sketchbooks, 120 x 185 mm. and smaller, and one momento book. The sketchbooks contain around 75 sketches, a mixture of watercolours and pencil drawings, some finished and some obviously intended as preliminary sketches for later paintings, several with notes. Provenance; from the Holding family of Hampshire. The subjects vary: one album contains views of Dresden dated 1867 - 7 as well as portraits of society ladies, the album inscribed Edith R. F. Holding, Dresden, May 8th. 1876; another has mostly country and shipping scenes; one is signed ‘Miss Mary Beatrice Holding, Kingsclere’; the momento book with contributions by a wide range of people, text and illustrations, inscribed E.B.L.H. [] 1908, (Lakeview) bears a small photograph of V.A.D. nurses at [indecipherable] Hospital, 1915 and contributions dated 1908 - 1924.
