4to. 230 x 180 mm. Half calf, marbled boards. A fine album of pen and ink drawings, c. 124 images mounted rectos only on 60 pages, one dated 1845, four dated 1849 and one June 26, 1853. A talented amateur, J. Love has remains elusive, but his skill and wit shows through in every image; many, but not all are signed, though they are obviously all from the same hand. The first illustration is presumably a self-portrait and the rest of the album is a mixture of portraits, caricatures and comic scenes, anthropomorphic animals and natural history. His scene of “The Blue Bonnets coming over the Border,” the witty picture play on “pen and ink” with goblins, along with the only watercolour in the album, of a pencil, are particular favourites.
