Cut silhouette on a printed lithograph background, 280 x 180 mm. the background sheet chipped and torn. August Edouard [1789 - 1861] was one of the most prolific silhouettists of the period and is estimated to have completed thousands of portraits. A pencil note to the verso reads “My father believed this to be a picture of his uncle Thomas Sadleir, Mullagh Kings Co. T.H.S.” Thomas was the son of Frank Sadleir, provost of Trinity College, Dublin. Provenance: from an Irish scrapbook.
