4to. pp. 30; 51 illustrations. Wrappers, Very Good. Jisc lists the University of Leeds copy only. The Foudroyant had a distinguished career, serving as Nelson’s flag ship in 1799/1800. After active service she became a guard ship for Plymouth Dock until around 1860 when she became a gunnery training ship. Sold out of service to German shipbreakers in 1891 and following a public outcry was bought by philanthropist G. Wheatley Cobb, who restored her and repurposed her as a boys’ training vessel at a cost of £25,000. Following a visit to Blackpool she was wrecked in a violent storm and after vain efforts to refloat her was sold for £250. The timbers and copper were sold at least once more before local craftsmen Goodall, Lamb & Heighway entered into a deal with the owners to secure a monopoly on the salvage. They went on to produce a great many items of furniture and decoration from the material. All clearly marked with their origin these now fetch a premium when the appear in the antiques trade. This is the original catalogue and prospectus for over 60 individual items which could be ordered. “.any article illustrated in this book can be made in ordinary oak at 25% less than the prices quoted.”
