Oil on canvas, 595 x 500 mm. in contemporary painted wooden frame, unsigned, a little dusty and some surface marks. Provenance: Dorothy Humphrey née Tester, thence by descent. The Tester family were neighbours to the Peake's in Wepham, Sussex. Dorothy Tester worked for Mervyn's parents as a housekeeper, her sister Corina Tester was Mervyn Peake's goddaughter. Tooveys. 2023. “The family were effectively neighbours of the Peake family in Wepham, Sussex. Anthony Tester said his family were a farming family and lived at number 97 (I understand Mervyn lived at 94). Anthony's sister Dorothy Humphry neé Tester worked for Mervyn's parents as a housekeeper. Anthony believes his other sister Corina Tester was Mervyn's goddaughter and he said he has recently looked at the parish church baptismal records that seemed to confirm this. According to Anthony, Mervyn gave the painting to Dorothy as a gift. His other sister Corina was also given items and she had sold them to Sebastian Peake after Mervyn's death. I suspect Fabian Peake might be able to corroborate this information, I don't know if either of you are in touch with him The painting belongs to Dorothy's daughter, but Anthony has been my source of contact. He feels 90% certain that Dorothy's daughter will want to consign the painting to Toovey's May Fine Art sale.” Tooveys email
