Large watercolour portrait, 480 x 350 mm. signed twice in pencil; additionally inscribed in ink “For Barbara 1941.” Not mounted or framed. In 1937, Peake was invited to accompany his then fiancée, Maeve Gilmore [later wife], on a European tour with Maeve’e mother and sister. He constantly drew and sketched during the tour. This was presumably a Hungarian woman in Budapest. The Barbara in the inscription may be Barbara Norman, minor poet and friend of Mervyn and Maeve, although this portrait is from the estate of Gordon Smith, Peake’s best friend since his schooldays.
