Hand coloured engraved satirical print, 190 x 230 mm. mounted on card. Bartholomew Fair was one of the pre-eminent summer fairs, having been granted its charter in 1133. It was eventually banned in 1855 for encouraging debauchery and public disorder, amply illustrated here in this rare satirical print. Separately published, this image was also used as an illustrated head piece for a song sheet “Bartholomew Fair, Sung by Mr. Mathews, to unbounded applause.”
