Citizen Bardolph Refused Admittance at Prince Hal’s.

Etching, 305 x 235 mm. with central horizontal crease. A rare etching showing Richard Brinsley Sheridan being refused entry to Carlton House, home of the Prince Regent, by ‘Big Sam,’ Samuel McDonald, his giant gatekeeper. Sheridan expressed sympathy and support for revolutionaries in France, hence the fierce lion head door knocker and refusal to allow him in.
