Printed warrant, 75 x 145 mm. The charity was formed from the will of Richard Watts dated 1579. A house was purchased from the sale of his assets where travellers were given a bed for the night, a bowl of hot soup and fourpence in the morning. The will stipulated that the travellers should be good and honest people and than no rogues of proctors should be allowed to stay there. All travelers were requested to have a bath on arrival. The house only accommodated six people and was called “The Six Poor Travellers.” Anyone wanting a bed had to line up outside and the overseer would come and pick six good and honest people. They were only allowed to stay one night at a time, but were allowed to return after a month. The Richard Watts Charities now run 67 flats in almshouses; The Six Poor Travellers, a Grade One listed building, is now a museum on the ground floor with accommodation for the custodian on the upper floor.
