Slip song/broadside ballad, 260 x 185 mm. a little creased and chipped. Together with a defective broadside newspaper, Lloyd’s Penny Sunday Times and Peoples’ Police Gazette for Sunday March 23, 1845 with a wood engraved illustration of the courtroom. John, or James Tawell [c. 1784 - 1845] was transported to Australia in 1814 for forgery. He returned a rich man having flourished as a chemist in Sydney and married a Quaker woman. He stared an affair with Sarah Hart who bore him two children. Apparently fearing that the affair would become know he murdered Sarah by the admission of prussic acid. Fleeing by train, the police were able to circulate his description ahead to his destination using the newly installed electric telegraph and he was identified as he left the station. He was arrested the following day and later sentenced to hang. The broadsheet newspaper includes a memoir of John Tawell.
