4to. pp. 8; illustrations. Green wrappers, split, browned and rather fragile. Described as a classic “cut throat” case, where each killer puts forth a defence that the other is guilty and in doing so only serve to convince the jury that they were both responsible. They murdered the elderly Henry Smith, a wealthy retired engineer of Muswell Hill following a burglary. The clue of a toy lantern left at the scene proved to be their undoing and they were eventually caught. Due to the animosity between the two men it was decided to hang them with another killer in between; this was William Seaman, who had murdered a pawnbroker and his landlady. One of the “Sensation” Series and scarce. A typical cheap railway publication of the period whose poor materials and production has led to few copies surviving; a single copy is recorded in a U.K. institution [Bishopgate Library].
