30 pages, bound in cloth, 195 x 145 mm. A most charming illustrated manuscript account, prefaced by a letter, on a young woman’s time in the Auxiliary Territorial Service [ATS], a women’s voluntary service established in 1939. “The average AT was enlisted to learn a soldier’s job. When she had learned the job, she stepped into a soldier’s place to release him for the front line. Then she did the job on her own - a man-sized job - conscientiously, and she was proud of her achievement.” The writer was based in Roberttown, West Yorkshire, and though devoid of any real service details, presumably for security reasons, it does give a view of her induction, her posting to the village and her relationship with her landlords. The final illustration shows a picture of the author as an old lady, a portrait of her in uniform on the wall being addressed by her granddaughter “.and Gran’ma - how many Germans did you kill”
