Three in memoriam cards for soldiers who died in the Boer War. George Herbert Pickles, a volunteer ambulance man from Hebden Bridge, arrived in South Africa in April 1900. He worked in a moored ship’s fever ward and died of dysentery within a month. Ernest Thomas Whitton died during the first day of De Wit’s first unsuccessful attempt to invade the Cape Colony. Ninety-eight Islingtonians died during the conflict. A memorial was erected and all their names are recorded.
