Bifolium, manuscript, 175 x 110 mm. Adressed on headed notepaper from the Ladies’ Imperial Club “Dear Mrs Foulkes, At last I have seen an air raid & it has been an exciting experience & I don’t feel very well. I was at Lanfier’s Bond St. & the raid started at about 10.30. They begged me not to go out but as I was so near my Club & knew that Tom & Harold would go to me there I risked it. The air ships were right over-head - I glanced up & saw about half a dozen & fled. The streets were mostly empty & I met first Tom & then Harold. Of course the noise was terrific but though [] only heard bombs it may only have been guns. We have not yet heard particulars buut our man tells me he counted 46 & I believe Tom & Harold saw more. Harold knew an hour beforehand that they were cooming! I though you might be interested in hearing that we were safe. Yours very sincerely Fanny [P.] Perry. Excuse this scrawl - am too shaky to write.” The second raid by Gotha bombers was on Saturday 7th July 1917 when 22 aircraft crossed the Channel and caused extensive damage in the East End of London and the City. 57 people were killed, almost 200 injured and the anger generated caused a big anti-German riot.
