Colour panorama by Nicholson featuring Ellen Terry on stage in 41 roles in chronological order, 160 x 1500 mm., on 2 conjoined sheets (becoming detached), rolled, with original ribbon and contained in the original printed box, bottom part only. Presumably one of c.150 copies, produced for those who attended the dinner. Winston Spencer Churchill, M.P., as Chairman, gave the address and it was also attended by Nicholson, Lillie Langtry, Bram Stoker and Granville Barker. A rare and fascinating tribute. Ellen Terry (1847-1928) was one of the leading actresses of her day, particularly famous for her Shakespearean roles, often acting opposite Sir Henry Irving, and later in the plays of Shaw and Ibsen. To celebrate fifty years on the stage, a benefit gala was held in her honour at Drury Lane Theatre on 12th June 1906 with performances by Lillie Langtry, Nellie Melba, Mrs. Patrick Campbell, Herbert Beerbohm Tree, Enrico Caruso and many others including several members of her own family. This panorama by William Nicholson celebrates the dinner a few days later at the Hotel Cecil and features Terry as Mamillius in The Winter's Tale in 1856 at the age of 8 to Lady Cecily Waynflete in Shaw's Captain Brassbound's Conversion in 1906.
