Richard Baigent [1799 – 1881] was the first Drawing Master for Winchester College and was in post from 1824 to 1874. He was born in Portsmouth in 1799 and was apprenticed to the artist Richard Livesay (1750-1826), a pupil of Benjamin West (1738–1820), who was Drawing Master to the Royal Naval Academy at Portsmouth. When Livesay moved to Winchester in around 1820, Baigent moved with him and later took up his position at the College. As well as teaching drawing, Baigent was a landscape painter, producing numerous views of the countryside around Winchester, a number of which were published as engravings in 1838. Four original drawings: Countryside near Winchester. Watercolour, 140 x 250 mm. Cathedral at Puy, France. Pencil and sepia wash, 175 x 130 mm. Winchester. Watercolour, 165 x 250 mm. with, mounted on verso of backing sheet- In Scotland, Jedburgh. Pencil, 130 x 230 mm. Together with a 4 page autograph letter from his son [] Francis Joseph Baigent, dated 1890; plus two printed letters from his son published in newspapers of the time, dated 1900 and 1901. The son is best known as one of the witnesses in the trial of the Tichborne claimant.
