Manuscript note reading “Written at the time of the Great Contest in Berkshire before the Reform Bill.” John Walter, named here, was one of the three members elected in the 1832 General Election, the first after the Representation of the People Act 1832, more commonly known as the Reform Act, which attempted to clean up the wide inconsistencies and corruption in the ‘rotten boroughs.’
