Single sheet, 210 x 170 mm. An unused surveyor’s assessment form for the many duties payable including houses and windows, servants, horses, carriages [four wheels and two], waggons [sic] and carts. There was no income tax payable in Britain before 1798 when it was levied to pay for the Napoleonic Wars, though it didn’t become permanent until 1842. Instead taxes were levied on a variety of items and services: for example here was a flat rate for houses with an additional tax based on the number of windows in the property.
