330 x 205 mm. old creases. A contemporary copy of the Sinn Fein oath, several versions of which exist; this one “taken from captured documents in various parts of the country and is the general oath taken by members of the I.R.A.” Intended to stir up hatred for the Catholic minority in Ulster, especially as represented by the I.R.A., during the Border Campaign of 1956 - 62. The origin of the “oath” is unclear and this version seems to go further than most “when the English Protestant brutes in Ireland shall all be murdered or driven out into the sea like swine. we shall embark for and take England and wipe out every vestige of the cursed blood of the heretics and murderers of Henry VIII. and shall wade in the blood of Orangemen and heretics.” At least one (slightly less bloodthirsty) example can be traced to Ulster Protestant Action, a Protestant vigilante group formed in 1956 and which later came under the control of Rev. Ian Paisley; by 1966 the group had reformed as the Protestant Unionist Party, in turn the forerunner to the Democratic Unionist Party.
