Engraved print, 270 x 200 mm. with portrait of Cox. James Cox [1723 - 1800], jeweller, watchmaker and manufacturer of expensive automata that had a great vogue in China. He opened a museum of his productions in Spring Gardens in the early 1770s. The whole contents were disposed of by lottery in 1774 for which a printed prospectus was issued of which this is the frontispiece for the catalogue [The Descriptive Inventory of Mr. Cox’s Museum, 1774.], designed by John Keyse Sherwin, a pupil of Francesco Bartolozzi. Although ostensibly published as a frontispiece for the catalogue, all copies of the catalogue traced have different illustrations, so we presume that this was issued separately.
