Handbill, 190 x 115 mm. stained. Adelphi Shades was a basement supper club, situated under Adam Street a fine development built by the Adam Brothers in the 18th Century. It aimed to cater for revellers heading for the new night clubs and music halls. The proprietor, John Regan was declared bankrupt by 1843: “John Regan, late of No. 80, Dean-street, Soho, Middlesex, out of business, previously of the Adelphi Shades. No. 11, Adam-street, Adelphi, Middlesex, carrying on business there as a Keeper of the Adelphi Shades Supper Rooms and also as a wire agent.In the Debtors' Prison for London and Middlesex.” Court Records.
