Handbill, 210 x 175 mm. laid down on thin card. Perilous Pool, an ancient pond so called because of many tragic drownings, was purchased by William Kent, who developed it by the construction of stone edgings, marble steps and a gravel bottom, renaming it the much more enticing “Peerless Pool.” There were subscriptions for a year, a month, or for a single bath. It was taken over by Joseph Watts in 1805, providing a comfortable living for his family. It closed in 1850 and was built over. Nearby street names Peerless street and Bath Street derive their names from its past.
