Five hand coloured engravings, each x mm. Five rare scenes from Croce’s 17th century tale of Bertoldo, a classic of Italian literature which was based on and early Medieval tale. Carlo Lasino [1759 - 1838] artist and engraver, taught engraving in Florence at this time, becoming a professor in 1800 and leaving for the Camposanto at Pisa in 1807 where he was appointed conservatore. Angiolo Volpini [1760 - 1835], was a Florentine artist who worked with Lasinio several times to reproduce his paintings. These five amusing scenes are part of a larger set, but it has been impossible to determine the extent of the series. I have traced a single example of ‘Servi bastonati al posto di Bertoldo’ in the cultural collections of Lambardy. A sixth engraving ‘Bertoldo torna avanti al Rè come le mosche’ is held in the British Museum collections [1991,1214.11] ascribed a date of c. 1810; it is likely earlier as by this time Lasinio had removed to Pisa.
