Hand coloured engraved game board in 16 panels mounted on linen, 680 x 480 mm., rather grubby and a little worn on the folds, bit an acceptable example of a rare game board. Based on a French version with the game refocused towards an English audience with a strong moralising and educational tone. Whereas the French version was played with two dice, here the printed rules recommend that a [tee]totum be used “to avoid introducing a Dice Box into private Families.” Maria Edgeworth, in Practical Education, warned against games of chance precisely because of their tendency to give a taste for gambling, making this an uneasy fit for a game of moral instruction.
