Anglo-Irish Arthur Joyce Lunel Cary (1888-1957) was an officer in the British colonial service in Africa immediately after World War I. --- This edition bears no specific publication date but may have been published c.1950s; despite bearing "first edition" statement to copyright page, this is probably not a first edition. First published in England in 1939, and reissued in 1948. --- In textured olive paper-covered boards backed in black cloth, with gilt-stamped spine titling. Unclipped jacket with drawing of title character in a village scene. --- With inked gift inscription to front free endpaper, a couple of scratches to covers, otherwise a clean, firmly-bound copy. Jacket with good-sized open tear to top edge of cover; some random rubbing but intact and protected in removable clear mylar wrapper.; Octavo (8 to 9 in. tall); (8), 261 pages
