A 1969 reprint edition of the 1910 issuance. An ex-library copy of an Everyman's Library reprint edition presenting the first novel written by Charlotte Bront. Though she wrote it before her notable "Jane Eyre" and other works, it was first published after her death. The story is semi-autobiographical, and draws on her experience as a teacher in Brussels as a young woman. Also with two chapters from author's "Emma", her unfinished novel, which is preceded by an introduction by William Makepeace Thackeay entitled "The Last Sketch." With an introduction by Margaret Lane. --- In EL larger format binding style 4. Full green cloth-covered boards with gilt-stamped spine titling and gilt interlocked "EL" in script at tail of spine. Volume lacks the dust jacket. --- A Fair-only copy, with considerable evidence of former ownership by a lending library: rubberstamping, torn-out front free endpaper, sticker, cocked spine and general wear. Overall, the book is complete and fully readable.; Ex-Library; 12mo (7 to 7-1/2 in. tall); xii, 260 pages
