Though she wrote it before her notable "Jane Eyre" and other works, it was first published after her death. The story is semi-autobiographical, and draws on her experience as a teacher in Brussels as a young woman. Also with two chapters from author's "Emma", her unfinished novel, which is preceded by an introduction by William Makepeace Thackeay entitled "The Last Sketch."
