A first US edition of a work likely first published in the UK. An illustrated edition of Sir Walter Scott's historical novel, first published in 1820, one in his Waverley series. The story is set in the medieval England of the 12th Century during the reign of Richard I, also known as Richard the Lionheart, and features a large cast of memorable characters. With Sir Walter's introduction and a dedicatory epistle attributed to Laurence Templeton. With 16 illustrations in full color by Rowland Wheelwright. --- In full dark blue cloth-covered boards with cover and spine titling in gilt. Volume lacks a dust jacket. --- Spine gilding has nearly completely flaked away, and with dampstains and some soiling to cloth. A partial split at front hinge has been carefully repaired on this item. Interior remains tightly-bound and binding is sound.; Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; 500 pages
